The Art Of Displaying Antique Golf Clubs
Whats the fun of collecting something rare if it gets hidden away in a closet never to be seen or enjoyed,
right?
That is especially true when it comes to vintage golf clubs. This is not because there is anything that
makes antique clubs any more valuable or desirable than any other collectible, but merely because of the mulititude
of creative things that you can do with them.
Most antique golf clubs collectors display their clubs for the
pleasure of others as much as for their own enjoyment. Whether you are a fan of golf or not, most people
easily become absorbed in the rich history and the ability to see or hold a club that may have actually been
used 400-500 years ago. It not very often that any of us get that opportunity, and it makes a lasting
impression when we do.
When it comes to displaying vintage golf clubs, the opportunities are endless
and the boundaries are few.
Have them displayed in a high traffic area where they can be seen and enjoyed frequently. Many collectors have
made them the focal point of the "man cave" in the house, that place of the wide-screen plasma tv, the pool table,
the dartboard, and the mini-bar. If you do not have a room like this, the beauty of antique clubs is that they
don't have to be displayed in a "sports room". They can be displayed anywhere in the house and have a meaningful
impact on the decor.
Remember that displaying them does not mean that you never have to touch them again. Make sure that they are
thoroughly cleaned and maintained before you mount them, and make sure that they are properly cared for after they
are displayed. this is especially true of hickory clubs, whose shafts often require specific attention. Nothing
looks worse than a great looking old club so covered with dust that you can hardly make out its details.
Don't skimp on the display materials. Nice shelves/and or display cases will not only show the pride that you have
in your collectibles, but also keep them in better shape on those days where the man cave gets a little rowdy.
Bottom line is that properly displayed vintage golf clubs have a wow factor that is absent with less than stellar
presentation. You certainly do not have to break the bank, but offer a display setting which is commensurate with
the value and history of the items.
Compliment the clubs with related materials. Golf, as a sport, has one of the deepest and richest histories of any
sport. There are innumerable accessories that, when presented alongside your vintage clubs, multiply exponentially
the impact. These items can range from old photos of the legends of the game, prints of famous courses, antique
golf balls, to vintage golf bags and clothing items.
The only thing that you are limited by is your imagination.
Remember that the effort that you put into displaying your antique golf clubs properly
will be returned many times over in the joy that they bring you, your friends, and your family.
